(David’s Apartment)
Journeys feed hunger.
Hungers feed the dripping candle wax of dinner.
Dripping downward, an inversion of the hierarchy of needs.
One desperate need followed by the next.
Us.
Sometimes slaves.
Sometimes…
Willing slaves.

“So here we are.” Katherine says, smiling.
“Yes. How was the drive?”
“You would not believe…”
“Oh, but I would.”
David leans in, eyes intent, lambent flame, dancing reflections.
The solace of sanctuary.
Back home, she would have said nothing to no one.
Who in this world has an ear for the strange?

“Well… As I was driving, I came across this hitchhiker…
Well…
She wasn’t a hitchhiker…
I don’t know quite how to explain…
But she was walking on the side of the road, in a blizzard.”
Katherine stops, replaying the scene in her mind, her thought process at the time.
David listens quietly.
“I picked her up…
Then it was like…
Well…
I was already feeling very…
Stimulated.
She was silent…
Strange.
Then I blacked out and woke up at the exit sign, alone in the car.”
“Blacked out?
Alone in the car?”
“Yes.
And one other thing.”
David leans in…
“I was wearing her lipstick…”
