Four Letter Tragedies

Married at an early age
They were each other’s escape
Wanted to change and raise their kids a better way
Didn’t know it would almost end in divorce
Because now he’s the glitter on the floor
Always slamming all the doors

His words are overused
Love isn’t an excuse
To hurt those close to you

She apologizes for how it’s not supposed to be
But won’t give up on shared history
Blind love makes her believe his lies
When he says he’s going to try
She’ll keep him and say it’s fine
Every marriage takes a little compromise

Grown up now she remembers crying on the staircase
Promises to not make her parents mistakes
But he’s not part of her kids lives
She ignored the warning signs
Had to move so she wouldn’t be alone
But if he wanted to be home
He wouldn’t go

They’re repeating history when they’re together
She should know better
Than to believe his pretty lies
When he says he’s going to try
But she’ll keep him and say it’s fine
Every marriage takes a little compromise

Is is too much to ask
To not repeat the past
I won’t be that way
But I know they all thought the same
It makes me cynical
Maybe I want something that isn’t typical

Please don’t let his words be overused
Let love be more than a sorry excuse
So I don’t hurt the way they do

It’ll be more than repeated history
I won’t live in accepted misery
His kids will never hear his lies
He won’t have to say he’s going to try
Every marriage takes a little compromise
But I hope love can be more than fine
