a bubble-bath away
from being held at bay
and that’s what makes a pervert sway
when really politicians would
much rather stay at home and play
Monopoly with wife-and-kids
the stress can turn a simple man
to Dimmesdale tormented by
an urge to shove and curse and hit
when really men with power would
much sooner take place in the pit
as make a controversial choice
so let’s not foist
a judgement quote so soon
we’ve all been stressed, and tempted too

Meant as a satirical piece on politicians and powerful men in general who blame sexual misconduct on stress. Written after seeing a news story about an American politician caught masturbating outside a pre-school. “Dimmesdale” is a reference to the hypocritical preacher in The Scarlet Letter.

Ha. Well written and verbalised. I trust the said politician has been charged, Who, in the name of Godot, would wish to be a politician? Just spent couple of hours trying to ascertain if Liz Truss has one attractive trait? Er...couldn't find one.

I haven’t read him since university, but I remember liking his use of atmosphere. He’s one of those 19th-century writers whose novels feel like 10 pages of description to every 1 page of something actually happening. I don’t mind that style myself, at least when it’s done well, but it drives a lot of readers nuts.
