The Smile of a Stranger
After our love ended
I was left wondering
if we were part of any
grand design or simply
pretty accidents of nature.
My emptiness begged
for some type of filling.
When I returned the smile
of a stranger, I realize
how vulnerable I'd become.
That same night when I felt
his coming, I knew my
emptiness would not be filled.

After losing a longtime lover I went through a chaotic time with casual relationships that were less than fulfilling. But still, they became memories and part of my life.

When you realise you are being too familiar in your encounters. The title and theme of your poem sparked one of my own:
The smile of a stranger
made me wonder: "Danger?"
when his smile I returned
as my hot desires burned.
Was I being too free
with my territory?
What hurt was I taking
for chance of 'lovemaking'?

Once removed, a challenge to find that piece that makes us whole again. Not many OEM, but cheap replacements that don't quite work. Your last paragraph very clever.

It's so easy to be led by something as simple as a smile.
No one can underestimate the path one has to walk in time to grow from those experiences.
All that chaos had to happen for the slowing down to serenity that is now part of your present.
