A Christian Understanding

for Sandi Toksvig

An arch of holy men looks out
and you would write to them and plead
an understanding deeper than just flesh?
Like Webster they are much obsessed by death,
and haven’t known of human love
since latching on to mother’s tits
like lichen to a ruined yard.

Don’t fool yourself, my dear.
The cretinous lizard
would sooner bathe
in your wife’s blood
than entertain a moment’s doubt,
if it was that a few hardline nonces
would look on him this day
and swing the hand of God his way.

Author's Note
L4 is borrowed from Whispers of Immortality by TS Eliot:

“Webster was much possessed by death And saw the skull beneath the skin”

The poem was inspired by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s recent decision to uphold an anti-gay marriage law from the late 1990s. Sandi Toksvig is a lesbian media personality who wrote to him, offering to talk to him about the decision.
