I Escaped, But Only Just - Part 21: An Unlikely Saviour
‘He went mad when he saw me for not turning up at the bus stop,’ Sam said over the phone a couple of days later. ‘And he whacked me one. Did he come and see you?’
‘Yes, but I managed to stay out of sight,’ I said, keeping my voice down so my parents would hear. ‘Have you talked to Peter again?’
‘Yes, he says he’s really sorry, but he can’t get involved. I’ve got to meet Bob this coming Thursday.’
‘What are we going to do? He’s a total lunatic.’
‘Kill him,’ Sam said. ‘I’ll take a knife with.’

Thursday came. After lunch, I sat in an A level music class with the other students, my attention constantly drifting back to Sam and Bob, and the scenario that would be taking place roughly around now.
‘Aren’t you listening to this?’ I stirred and looked up. The teaching was talking to me. The rest of the class were laughing. They were listening to a medieval piece of music that they found amusing. I joined in the laughter, and for a moment, I nearly forgot my troubles as we all laughed together. But I couldn’t forget the troubles entirely. In fact, I doubt I will ever forget that Thursday afternoon in the music room with the medieval piece playing on the stereo. Laughter combined with worry. Amusement heavily tinged with exhaustion. I might have seemed like a normal eighteen-year-old to the rest of the class, but something terrible was going on that they didn’t know about. Worse, I didn’t feel I could turn to anyone for help, as I felt too ashamed to admit what Bob had really done.
‘Did you…’ I began when I met Sam halfway through the afternoon.
He shook his head. ‘Too risky.’
‘Shit.’
As reported to police in 2017

At a later stage, Sam contacted associates connected to an adult criminal gang via this mate Peter (not his real name.) Sam agreed to meet Bob with a carefully constructed plan in mind. It appears Bob realised that he’d been lured into the path of a violent criminal (a sort of rough diamond) and took fright - but these details are for Sam to reveal, which I believe he did at a later stage in a video statement to police during the 2017 investigation.
Bob was never charged for the offences listed here and remains unaware that I gave evidence against him on Video, as I later withdraw support for a prosecution due to fear of reprisals.
In the next few posts, I'll remove the Extreme Content warning and concentrate on reaching a general conclusion.
