Heatwave

accustomed
to violence
you held me
in silence

commanding
compliance
still i grew
in defiance

——

when walking
on eggshells
from dawn
until dusk

you learn
to be silent
because
you must

you trapped me
inside
locked the door
tossed the key

proceeded
to torture
degrade and
abuse me

you set us
both on fire
then you
apologized

but i didn’t
believe you
when i looked
in your eyes

——

i gaze out
a window
longing for
a true lover

someone who
i can trust
who will not
make me suffer

i see her
in my dreams
holding hands
our secret

one day
i will wake
without any
regret
