Drowning

I'm gonna lay here
In the bed of my truck
And try to count the stars
And
All the promises
That were ever made

It's complicated
Because promises turn into
All the I've-changed pleadings
On your knees feelings

And the tempo of the music
Speeds up into
All the never-agains and the not-anymores
That fall from big brown eyes
And the mouth that frowns and cries
I can't do this anymore

Next comes the hot rush
The heat in my cheeks
When I remember
All the cant-be-undones alongside the remember-whens
You are throwing at me

They turn into
All the what-were-you-thinkings
And oh-my-God-we're-sinkings
The ship is going down

Definitely, most definitely
all the shoulda-coulda-wouldas
Are dragging us to the bottom
Pulling us under the cover
Of the black silky water
Where once we spilled our laughter

There is no more air
The stars have all gone awry
The water now overhead
Filling up with
I'm-so-sorrys
So many
Sorrys

So I'm gonna lay here
At the bottom of the lake
Drowning in all the words
That have burned at the stake
