Skull and Crossbones
The ages haunt the bookworm brain
With letters in a torrent blast
No concentration might sustain
Into a resurrected past;
No measure of nostalgia dust
To which some water we might add
Like magically reversing rust
For glory once more to be had
Among all sorts of ancient things
That once upon a time were grand
Where now only ruination sings
To cover pride in heaping sand...
Taming ambition's eager dare
Into extinction's stale air.
With letters in a torrent blast
No concentration might sustain
Into a resurrected past;
No measure of nostalgia dust
To which some water we might add
Like magically reversing rust
For glory once more to be had
Among all sorts of ancient things
That once upon a time were grand
Where now only ruination sings
To cover pride in heaping sand...
Taming ambition's eager dare
Into extinction's stale air.
