The gift that is not for me to give
From the moment I met with your eyes,
I saw a gem hidden within you
Though no one saw,
I believe it to be true
From The moment I saw you cry,
My heart broke, and I wished to move the world for you
I’d give you the moon, part the seas,
If it meant I’d see your sweet smile again
I wished to shower you with presents and gifts,
But permitted was I not,
For your journey is long, and your steps towards it have just begun
I did my best to become your present and be thy gift,
I fought for you in the shadows, I was attentive to your every need.
Where I could I’d support, where I could I’d lend my hand, where I couldn’t I’d fall to my knees and pray
You have grown to be a virtuous woman, perfectly flawed, and with time, an upright character
Of the many gifts I bestowed upon you, there remained one I vowed to patiently wait.
I was refrained from offering. Barred from speaking, withheld from showing, for I was asked to make an oath
But show, I could not refrain. My every word, my every action, all of my attention was to you.
The small trinkets and sweet cakes, where only an extension of the grand gift I wished to impart.
But instead, what I became to you, was what you needed from me, I became a friend to show you what a friend should be.
“Soon”, I believed, “I could give her the gift I can only give once”
“Soon”, I believed, “ i could share with her what I can only share once”.
“Soon, the oath will be fulfilled.”
But that will not be so. For before I could, before the appointed time was upon us, you found another.
You found another that brought a smile to your face, gladness to your heart, and a song to your soul.
You found the one who would stand by you through the horrors of life.
You found the one who would enjoy your presence during the blessings of life.
All before I was permitted to offer my gift. A gift I can only share with one and none other.
A gift that can never be grasped nor understood but by its receiver.
The gift is as old as time itself, it was never created and can never be destroyed.
It is a unique gift, it is not grand, it is not expensive. It is small, yet meaningful.
We have shared meals together, we have shared adventures together, we have created stories together.
we have formed moments together. But this one thing, I have now realized, I shall never be able to share with you:
Three simple words “I love you”.
Here I bid you a “farewell.” For a friend I cannot be, as my heart will always hope for love.
It is here I must diminish. It is here I must take my exit. I must not miss my train. For conflict will arise, if I remain.
I bid you, “Adieu”. I wish you the best, and that their gift to you is a blessing and ever-lasting.
I saw a gem hidden within you
