I Will Not Forget You
“I Will Not Forget You”
From the moment I met you,
I knew I never would forget you.
And I swore your love was pure.
And I swore you would love me more
If I played by the rules that you laid out
If I could just sing to the fade out
Of our favorite song—
If I just could do no wrong
I’d always hear your voice—
But the song was only noise.
I would not erase the memory
Of the way you used to look at me.
And I know if our hearts remain
The same, we will meet again.
Perhaps in this life, perhaps downstream
We may share the same summer’s dream,
And wake to meet for the first time anew.
And I will not have forgotten you.
No. In the next world, my spirit will endear
The same soul that left me weeping here.
And I pray you’ll smile to know,
No matter where our spirits go
I’ll be waiting for that first kiss
I’ll be waiting to make the same promise
As I no doubt have made all our lives through
That I never will forget about you:
Through what trials and error, through our mistakes
Through as many lives as it takes
Through what eternities may recur
Until we are not as we once were
Until time ceases to lead the way,
And we meet for the last time someday:
Merely guests on this mortal plane—
When no more lives remain
Perhaps you will not hurt me as you do
And though all lives end, I will not forget about you.
