Perpetual Pugilist - Third Fight
From family gym ejected
the Summer before
final amateur season
left in ring adrift
as a rudderless boat
with no cutman, promoter, or coach
fighting now as welterweight
opponent's blows
come faster stronger
from bobbing and weaving
all faculties spent
disheartened, grieving
resigned to defeat
blessed bell sounds
ending the round
Turning to lonely corner
big smile erupts
on bruised, swollen face
members of a friendly gym
had taken the place
of forner disparaging seconds
with wounds bound
refreshment provided
compassionate,
wise coaching proffered
their confidence restored
drive to win reignited
sure, as next round begins,
they will not be defeated.

Dear GW,
I'm reminded of a saying after the rain storm shines the sun. Or something along those lines. What I always got from it was even when things look and feel terrible eventually someone or something shows up to ease the pain. For me your poem felt like the storm clouds were lifting and I liked that. The positive was found and the stanza reflecting the smile of acknowledgement and gratitude was really uplifting. Terrific write. H🌷
