Bread and Circuses (NaPoWriMo 2022 #24)
Blood and sand
blood and sand,
said the villain
gloating
at the depraved need
for violence
within us all.
And I simply thought
'No,
you twonk
It's:
bread and circuses'.
As in
food and
entertainment.
The basic needs
of being fed
and something
to stave off
the thud of mortality
and existential crises.
People are depraved,
sure,
but they're not evil,
just looking for a kick
and are weird clowns
in the circus of life.

Inspired after watching Episode 2 of 'Grace' on ITV, starring John Simm as titular DS Roy Grace. A thrilling series if somewhat dark and sinister, but not gruesome; the right side of thrill that draws you in, rather than perverse gore for its own sake as some other shows may do so.

not caught up with Grace yet, but ITV does crime series very well, and most seem to point out that violent acts are generally borne out of fear for oneself or else to protect ones loved ones

The series tends to show crime and violence in what I would call the 'classical style': done by evil and villainous; threats to society. The classical good vs evil, to which ITV as you'd said, do well and can be respected for.
