Irony

They cried
their welcoming hosannas
to his face
as he, in Pilate’s wake,
rode apace , palm waved, Davidicized,,
upon a Zechariah-ed jenny to
the Holy City where,
some five days afterwards,
he’d  be condemned to death
even after being crowd displayed
as whipped
and mocked, and mortified.

I wonder if
he ever came to think
before, or at the moment when,
all bruised and bloodied,
crowned with thorns
and crucified,
he then expelled an agonizing breath
and  died,
that he had made a grave mistake
in trusting to his God
for some deliverance
from the consequences
of the back-turned,
railing “kill him” proclamations
of the fickle mob.
