The Far Side of the Stars
“The Far Side of the Stars”
You who were not so innocent…
Could life ever have been different?
I stared into the moon with you
In so many skies—just us two
And the heavens that we knew.
When you disappeared into my tears
When you had been gone for so many years
I forgot the sound of your voice in my ears.
Take your time on the far side of the stars
One day soon, the sky again will be ours
To view with the earth beneath our gaze.
I will remember the moonlight upon your face.
What I would give to be haunted by my friend.
I don’t know if death is a doorway or the end.
I will reach that answer someday.
I know you longed to watch me grow,
But with such pain, you chose to go.
You were my shield, and you were my guide.
Now the tears have never truly dried.
They are within, where none can view
Them fall from the piece of my heart
That died that day with you.
I do not want to reach Heaven,
You are not there.
You once told me you would go elsewhere,
To some passage none have chosen.
I will follow, though I search a thousand years—
To find you somehow on that road
On the far side of the stars.
