A Lover and the Lack Therof

I saw you out of the corner of my eye
I barely noticed you at first,
My god, you really look different around your friends
I could tell you hadn't seen me yet
Your smile was undeniably bright
(As per usual)
And your laugh sounded gregarious as ever
Always the center of attention
Easy to be cool when you're the only one old enough to buy alcohol here
I happen to linger a bit too long
And suddenly our eyes meet,
You a deer in headlights
My heart nearly exploded right out of my chest
Both of us clearly terrified of the other
Yet dead locked just the same
"Don't worry" I think to myself
"Your secret is safe with me"
What would I possibly get out of revealing what you made abundantly clear you wanted hidden?
It really isn't any of my business anyway
At least, that's the choice I'm gonna make now
Finally I turn and walk back outside
"This party sucks anyway"
I was just gonna walk home when I heard
The screen door open and shut behind me
All the hair on my body stood on edge
But why bother turning around?
Someone might mistake me for actually talking to you
"What are you doing here?"
A tinge of anxiety in your voice
"Why would you come here?"
A bit of desperation too, nice thats new
"Obviously I didn't know you would be at
This party.
Aren't you a little old to be here anyway?
What are YOU doing here?"
Anger flashes red in your eyes,
Cause you hate when I bring up your age
Usually I'd be scared but I think for once
I have the upper hand
Maybe
You take a deep breath and put your hand on my shoulder "Look
Baby
just go home.
I'll come pick you up around 1. Ok?"
Kiss on the cheek
Sigh
"Yeah...okay"
I go to walk back through the house but
Your hand grabs my elbow
"Do you mind walking round the side of the house? I don't want anyone to see us walking in together"
