RITUAL

rule one is plain: "fresh and hot"
which is why my pot
is a one-cup shot
and worth the wait
for the that first round -- rinse the hub
and place the grounds
just so that they might best infuse
to make a dark and potent brew
and dare not taint with milk or sweet
but black and rich, and take a seat
and then rule two, how will I fare?
five hundred words without despair

Author's Note
I have a quote taped to the bookshelf over my desk -- "I write a little every day, without hope and without despair." It's from writer Isek Denesin. I don't know her work but love the quote. I set a quota of just 500 words. It's often nonsensical gibberish, but it is 500 words.
