Why do I this tormented happiness adore?
The aching bliss I’ve never known before.
How sweet the poison of my passion’s need
For the shadow in which I choose to bleed.

I have lost the blush of the lily—
The daffodils, I cast out to sea
As the lone wind passed me by
And the sirens sang in melody.

The eon of a breath has come to pass
In the sands that fill the hourglass.
O! That my heart may never mend
And this joyous sorrow never end!

The solitude filled with what was
Never mine must give me pause
For the longing! The longing that is bliss
To drink the lips that I shall never kiss.

Never! Never shall I know that spring
Of solace for the suffering.
Ah! This torment! My own to hold
As though wrought of pearl and gold.

If love is so bitter, why then shall it be
Breaking me so beautifully?
I will take the sea and drink it dry,
As tears shed in the ache of secrecy.

This passion in silence my love,
Naked with the thoughts of
Your absence eternal beside me
When I drink the tears of the sea.
