(…)

In the sanctuary of shadows, I have bled
With the tears that I have longed to shed.
I saw the ghost to the silence of your speech,
And a hand beside me, always out of reach.

O! A desert erases the sea of sweetest rest.
And within the oasis of my slumbering breast
Rain the dreams of a parting I must endure
Wherein your face, once lovely, has become a thing obscure.

I cannot leave without saying that I loved you,
Though by that token your heart withdrew,
And you know a piece of me dies to see
You walk away from me.

There is more to Heaven than forever—
Something I swore we would see together.
Say anything else to the tears within my eyes,
For eternity is so long a time to say our goodbyes.

What embrace remains to delight?
May it with sorrow’s flame ignite
My longing for the arms of he
Who stole the heart from out of me?

O! My withering spirit brought ashore
Wholly shall be yours forevermore.
Given willingly, but unwilling did you take
The heart you never meant to break.
