Their Favourite Place
This was for the 'Tragedy Strikes' Competition
Every day she thinks of him,
While putting the kids to bed.
Every night he daydreams of her,
While his nightshift routine was read.
Every time she cooks and cleans,
She smiles at the thought of his touch.
Every time he washes the car,
He grins thinking how she’d laugh so much.
Every time she tends the garden,
She remembers their very first date.
Every time he drinks from his coffee,
He remembers that time he was late.
Late for their meeting at their favourite place,
At dawn, may 23rd.
They were planning to run off, away from it all,
Away from doubt they always heard.
But as he quickly stuffed his case,
With just items that he thought he’d need.
His younger brother had gotten in trouble,
Trouble started from a teenager’s greed.
He ran outside to help him out,
Thinking it’d be a bit of a fight.
But in all the confusion and shouting,
He was stabbed without cause in his side.
He scrambled around holding his wound,
His brother screaming and crying with guilt.
He wanted to get to her, that’s all he could think,
Have his pain taken away by love they’d built.
But his brother over-powered his weakened state,
And took him to get help nearby.
She was left unknowing at their favourite place,
Just wanting to hear why.
She waited until noon at their favourite place,
By now he was in a hospital bed.
He dreamed dazedly of her, unaware,
While questions erratically filled her head.
She looks at her bags that were ready and packed,
She decides to still quietly disappear,
Never again will they see each other,
Being abandoned was what she had feared.
He went back to their favourite place,
Every day for the next few weeks.
Never knowing where she’d gone
It haunted him that true love was left to leak.
Every day she thinks of him,
While putting the kids to bed.
Every night he daydreams of her,
While his nightshift routine was read.
