Sukie nodded; her tear-washed face turned shamefully down as she sobbed quietly.
He lifted her chin roughly, glaring, ‘say it, girl. Say you understand.’
‘I…I understand Uncle Joe,’ she whispered. Terror surged, her shame turning to desperation. Polly was so young, so innocent. She must be spared.
