TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
My Lord, l want to be quite clean, and live
my precious life with laughter pure and loud
and not to shun the men, and be alone
weighing my sins that rack my heart and mind.
My Lord, please save my heart from evil acts
that l may do unconscious of their woe.
These acts return to burden me with guilt
I cannot bear as they have fearful weight.
When l would like to read a precious book,
I hate to feel my sins sharing my look.
I read but useless; nothing l absorb
as my sins can picpocket all my gain.
So wide's the world of sin, and l fear all.
They make me like a slave, fully controlled.
They torture me while others are so pleased.
I leave them to their joy and live my gall.

Re. TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
Apparently, despite your repeated professions of faith you DON"T believe in what the Apostles' Creed asserts:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord...
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS ... ,
And why do you assume that anyone is interested in hearing about how tortured and worthy of pity you think you are?.
BTW, given that you are asserting your inability to remember or comprehend what you have just read whenever you try to read something, you should have written "I read but uselessLY".
And here:
and not to shun the men
you've once again engaged in deixis. Which men are "the" men?
Poor writing.

kind of a gothic feel here.
pretty good use of iambs, with some basic substitutions.
Interesting!

The question is whether J-Z''s substitutions are intentional or accidental. Do they come as a result of planning, let alone an applied knowledge of what is considered an acceptable iambic substitution? Or is it because he's demonstrably clumsy when it comes to setting out his lines metrically, especially since he engages in deixis and grammar gaffes when he writes and is more interested in getting rhymes than in making sense.

Very dear Mark,
Thank you very much for your reading and comment. Indeed, the atmosphere of the poem is gothic. That's because sin and remorse are fearful to me.

Re: Re. TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
I wonder if either of you know what "gothic" is since this is hardly a piece of dark romanticism nor does it conjure up desolate or remote settings or deal with macabre, mysterious, or violent incidents.
In any case, why would "remorse", i.e., what one needs to be moved to repentance for sin and that which often precedes forgiveness -- be something to be feared?

Dear Baldwin,
Thank you for your comment, but to tell you the truth, there is nothing worth answering for me.

Who told you I meant MACABRE by gothic. I meant LONELY AND FEARFUL as sin leads you to such an atmosphere. Baldwin, be reasonable for once, or you will be quite illogical. Surely, now you will give a lesson in logic.

Re: Re. TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
Please show me how and where the style of your piece imitates or emulates "the style popular[in novels] in the 18th and 19th centuries, which described romantic adventures in mysterious or frightening places or situations" let alone that you depict and/or narrate an adventure there.

What does living one's "gall" entail?
Cue the "if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you" (or a variant thereof or a "crickets") response.

If you tell me about your job, l'll know something about you. You are indefatigable, and very fond of talking as if you have nothing else to do.
Re: Re. TORTURES ONE CAN'T ESCAPE
I'm not sure how knowing something about me makes my request to you - which could have come from anyone -- something that is answered adequately with a red herring. But I'll tell you what my job is when you demonstrate how the style of your piece imitates and/or emulates the style that permeates novels written in the 18th and 19th centuries which described romantic adventures in mysterious or frightening places or situations and how your piece depicts and/or narrates an adventure there.
And you are very fond of using red herrings in response to legitimate questions about the validity of your claims when you know that you are unable to show what you claimed the characteristics of your submissions are.
Still waiting to hear what you claim "living one's gall" entails. Will I receive a red herring or some other dodge of my question about this, too?
