Persistence of Identity

The flame is not extinguished deep in heart,
still true injustice sets the mind afire,
 the countercurrent strong, will not retire,
albeit cloistered in the world of art.
It is impossible to shed that part
 of personality that selves require
 for continuity; that which was priòr
evolves - a psyche lasts without fresh start.
  But crises change the tenor and the tone
  and may reveal pith formerly unknown;
   a chance to build on strengths else hid from sight,
   a force of will that makes hard going light.
    One needs to recognise continuum
    to take account of what’s been overcome.
