ROBERT JOHNSON
they said satan
taught him
how to stroke that old guitar
so she'd
purr
and coo
and whimper
and wail
in the bliss
of his long, dark fingers' caress,
her strings bent hard
and pressed against him,
her moans and laughter
rising from a deep black hole
and set free
to haunt the lonely liquored night
even now
through the tinny fuzz
and crackle of an antique recording
tricks
the devil taught
not long before
he called the loan
taught him
how to stroke that old guitar
so she'd
purr
and coo
and whimper
and wail
in the bliss
of his long, dark fingers' caress,
her strings bent hard
and pressed against him,
her moans and laughter
rising from a deep black hole
and set free
to haunt the lonely liquored night
even now
through the tinny fuzz
and crackle of an antique recording
tricks
the devil taught
not long before
he called the loan

Author's Note
Robert Johnson, so-called King of the Delta Blues, recorded 29 songs before he died at age 27 in 1938. Eric Clapton called him "the most important blues singer that ever lived."
Legend says he sold his soul for that amazing talent.

Nice poetic tribute ... I love the blues ... a local BBQ joint has a BBQ/Blues festival each year (prior to COVID) ... looking forward to going again ...

Thank you so much, L.
I love the blues, too. Especially the old, raw, acoustic kind, but any blues will do.

I am also a fan of the blues and I love the Legend of Robert Johnson.
... I am deeply fascinated with Faustian story structures.
Have you seen the movie American Satan? Malcolm McDowell plays Satan.
I loved the movie.

I haven't seen it, but I'll look for it.
One of my favorites you may be familiar with -- Angel Heart (1987), with Micky Rourke, Robert De Niro, and Lisa Bonet.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

Lu Cipher.
(I watched after I came up with my pen name, so long ago. This was also before the Matrix.)
Very cool.

Love the way you have pulled this together not overstated and an atmosphere that develops the satan theme, also love the assonance of lonely liquored night. Very nice indeed

Thanks so much.
This poem kind of evolved and I still see ways I could maybe make it better, especially toward the end.
Sometimes I have to stop editing lest I kill a thing.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
It's an honor.

Thank you for reading and commenting, O.
Yeah, he was an amazing guitarist.
I have looked at his hands in photographs (even the one I posted) and, I swear, they look like big spiders.
It's no wonder they could span so many frets at once.
Thank you again.

Yes, his hands capture attention; he was so gifted and sad he died young. Hugs and peace, O)

Thanks so much, Scarlett.
So happy you enjoyed this poem.
I could listen all night if I didn't have to work in the morning.
