Outside

Walk with me on the rings of Saturn
And watch Neptune and Pluto war
For closeness to the burning Sun.
Catch the tail of the icy comet heading south
And skim out of the Milky Way with me:
Stay a while, and come with me.

And way out here, Earth
Is invisible and impotent:
A dream in the mind of long-gone gods.
There are no confines here:
No out, no in, no up, no down,
No right and wrong,
And nobody else to hear us laugh,
Cry, scream, live and die.
Here there is nothing,
Here is true freedom,
And here is me.
Come with me, and tell me now,
With no distractions,
What’s on your mind.

And when we’re done talking,
We’ll turn and drift home
Over a million years.
We’ll find the world a different place,
And they’ll ask what we thought
And what we talked about
In a million years.
And now it is nothing:
No right and no wrong,
And the world has moved on.

Did you find, out there,
With me, drifting lazy hands
In the clouds of Venus,
That this is overrated;
Or did you find, out there,
What you really wanted,
After everything else?
