I kind of like this.
I think the topicality of it...the way that everyone knows what you're talking about...takes away from the effect.
If there were an overlay of some kind of surreal / absurd / cartoon un-reality, that kept the reader at a distance, off his pins a bit, but the same basic structure & effect of the poem were achieved, it would be stronger: the clear topicality tends to put readers into one political and ideological thought-bubble camp or the other.
Consider Randell Jarrell's poem, "Death of the Ball-turret Gunner": if Jarrell had titled the poem "Abortion," it wouldn't have had the same effect.

Yep. Had a sister-in-law ( by marriage ) pass away this weekend from the Delta variant. Then Monday a very sweet nurse's aid in her 20's did. But, wait, let's not talk about that. It's hump day!
