One Particular Morning

Routines are so
routine
but these days, particularly,
it’s close to all one has

nights cover pulled back
dress for the day
mount my wheeled steed
which delivers me to the coffee pot

fresh mug of coffee in hand
rolling out the back door
to my assigned designation
the side porch, facing south

this morning Jimmy Buffets
“One particular harbor”
has washed up in my subconscious
button stuck on auto replay

brothers racing each other
near the edge of the sand
before playfully trying to drown one another
in the shallows of this one particular cove

the loud chatter of an agitated squirrel
arguing with a blue jay
over ownership of a single acorn
pauses the music and home movie

the full mug of coffee back in focus
no longer warming my hand
drained into the parched grass helps reason
it and the morning wasn’t a complete waste
