withholding bread

i was too slow
            to die to self,
                        and so life slew
                                    me a la carte.
                                                            i was too lax
                                                                        justice to give:
                                                                                    revenge with swift
                                                                                                swords pierced my heart.
pity i gave
            that purchased scorn;
                        impatience earned
                                    me gross distrust.
                                                my lack of love
                                                            brought me disdain;
                                                                       withholding bread
                                                                                    leaves me dry crust.
