Dying to be essential

I never thought I'd miss the sound
Of the pots and pans
Clanging around
The marinaded smells
Mixed with empty hot wells
My calm and my anger
When the customer yells
Consumed with myself
Thought I could do this every day
For the rest of my life
I swore this could be fate
Till a coughing came around me
And said life had to wait
Just when I got interviewed,
Promoted, and almost paid
They said the job was over
That my chance had been delayed
I was depressed
And drunk, and bored
So I tried to find the next
Essential venture
that might take me aboard
Yes I'll put my mask on
Sanitize the doors alone
These work boots
Scuffed and dirty
Sanitizer my cologne
I hope my mask is thick enough
To combat
What no one knows
And my managers
Don't wear no masks
It seems that they don't care
That essentially
I'm meant to be more than the
Badge I wear
So I punch that clock,
Give me those tick tocks
Bloody knuckles to bones bare
And find me there
With sprays and cloths
Cleaning, unaware
I do this cause I love my kids
I do this cause the rents due
I do this cause I have no choice
I'm dying to be essential
