she is born to love
in her green eye is a tear held forever

she wraps her arms around her kin
and all they see
is her red hair everywhere

she is born to fight
in her black eye is mud held forever
for all the lost children
she wraps her arms around her foe
and all they see
is her dark hair everywhere
my name by right
she is born to heal
in her grey eye is a cloud held forever
for all the dead children
she wraps her arms around her fate
and all she sees
is her hair
white
everywhere
she is born to love

The hair here feels important. Metaphors for the passing of time from the fiery red of youth, the more sensible adult years of dark and the ageing of the white.
What comes to me most when reading this is a sense of trying to find balance — balance between all of the different parts of ourselves.
A friend of mine once said our minds are like Russian dolls, all the parts of ourselves fitting inside one another to make a whole, and that’s always stuck with me.
I was also struck by (and I don’t know if this was intentional) but you have fire, water, and Earth throughout the poem. I pondered on the fourth element, and the reason for the non inclusion of air. Then thought of how the air surrounded the poem itself. You don’t see air. You feel it. And it seemed to add another dimension of experience to the poem.
This was intriguing to ponder. Thank you for sharing.
