The Drink

Amber sympathy
Make a toast
Toast another
Toast the brain, heart and liver
Send the enigmatic pain
Down the condemnation river

Relief
Let it flow
Let it sink
Warm and slow
Don't tread the wounds
Of the life uncertain
Hide behind hypotheticals
Hypocritical burdens

You have your caffeine, trans fat and porno
Stop living a lie and let it go

Weeds and mosquitos
Dandelions and bees
Nameless nemesis
Shadows the school children
Playing their winning games still
Down the dark, cracked corners
Running from God and Grandmother
Ice cycles on the church pews
Beer cans rusting in the sun
Open legs to the sweet midnight air
Stretching the smile
Faking the lines
Holding still to the cringe
The telephone rings: appointments with Babylon--we come running

Alas
The white coat messianic drudge
Weilding his sword--prognosis
Hunter green with satisfaction
Probably cirrhosis
The family in the lobby
Laughs and cries
For the auspicious label
The only take that will take on this life
Freedom

Author's Note
I wrote this before my mother died in 2008. I have spent a lot of time in hospital waiting room: it's a void world filled with palpable emotions of sadness, anxiety, desperation, anger, irritation, resignation. The medical workers get tired of watching families destroyed and the system being taken over with preventable disease. I understand this sentiment well, but I also know the other side.  Being treated as a second class citizen when you are watching your family member die when you are completely alone.  Shouldering the burden alone and being treated with contempt is extremely traumatic.  Especially when it has happened multiple times within one life.  Not playing the victim...just releasing these emotions in a safe place and a safe way. Thank you for reading this.
