Memory Lane

I remember a face from a long time ago
And it pulls me back through the years
To a time that seemed to be much less
Consequential
Different parties and partners
And plans made on the fly
Living by the seat of your pants
Was I ever really that young
The face in my mind's eye
With the bright blue eyes filled with mirth
And a nose bent so slightly to the east
Brings those times roaring back to me
I almost wish I could do it all again
I never had a better friend
I'm not really sure who's wingman
Was who
But with time comes wisdom
The ability to see what a footloose lifestyle might bring you
I can't believe that I was so blind
Back in the day
I was with a girl for a time
And then he spent some time in her company too
When I realized that I really needed her
It was much too late
My friend is just a face in my memory now
It's many years since we spoke to each other
Tripping down memory lane can be bittersweet
But oh we did have us some times then
