Time To Dance

I could tell by the look in your eyes
That things were going to get ugly
For the time being at least
So I got ready for the relationship
Shuffle

Things were going to change
Or at least change positions
So that from your perspective
I was put into my place

Being used to your peculiar ideas
Of the optics of being a couple
And your unending need for control
I readied myself to have a new coat of paint
Carefully applied to what you think are the problem areas

You can't have the scuff marks of life
Showing through for your friends to talk about
And since things are apparently my fault completely
The touch ups will be applied to my shortcomings

Having done this dance
A time or ten before this
I'm quite used to your artful applications
Not to mention taking the blame

And since your own perfection is so obviously unassailable
I can understand where the thought might enter your mind
That this time like all the times before
I would simply accept the blame

Only this time I've added a couple of steps to the dance
Making this the new and improved shuffle
And I'm putting on my dancing shoes
And doing a soft shoe out the door

And you can paint this picture
Any way you want
But you'll have to dance the final number
All by yourself.

What will the neighbours say?
