Discovering Poetry

There was a sequence to my poetry

First was realizing...
“Oh yeah,” wasn't a good comeback
Felt like a twit
I was maybe in 4th grade
I discovered wit
I studied famous comedians, listened intently
Found books on the subject..
I was such a nerd, but I read them contently
I found that words were important

Then I found “quotes”
The ability to phrase things in just the right way
Started dissecting them
JFK, Martin Luther King
with words took us where we had never been
I realized quotes had power

Then I found lyrics
The music I could love, but if the words were wrong
I hated the song
I was Weird Al before he was
I played and felt comfortable with lyrics

After School I got a factory job
The presses so loud you couldn't hear anyone around you
When they struck the ground would quake
The job so boring it was hard to stay awake
So I made up songs
Oh, if only I could have remembered them

Then life got in the way
Marriage, layoffs, transfers..
Found myself going to college
Wanting to learn computers
Maybe make some money on a little bit of knowledge
They put me in a writing class
Found I had a knack
Then transferred again and never went back

Life again, got in the way
Then I learned a trade
Got divorced, then remarried
Time flies
I retired

And the written page
I discovered again.

Author's Note
I was going to try to rhyme the whole thing, but I realized an occasional rhyme worked for this, at least I thought so.
