Unforgivable
How selfish
can you be
to have children
at a time like this!
every word
screaming
between the lines
in breath holding silence
and cutting excuses
The passive-aggression
consistent eleven times
in a row
Each time more
unforgivable
I cannot wink
I cannot make excuses
I cannot forgive
such impurity
This “friend” now
a stranger
I never knew
He’d have to
become a living
different creature
to be friends
with me
ever again
It’s the sin
against the breath
of life in man
the Holy Spirit
I cannot forget
or even forgive

I remember as a student in the 1970s debating whether we would/should have children due to the distinctly-felt possibility we'd all get blown up anyway sooner or later in a nuclear fry-up due to the Russia-America Cold War. My conclusion is along the lines of Robert Frost's comment when asked shortly before he died what he had learned about life, and he replied: "it goes on". And yes it does, and each generation has its own challenges and opportunities. All life is valuable and has meaning, even if it is short, or in some way unjustly constrained.

You and Robert Frost are people more relatable to me and my husband with that idea than my “friend” is. Well put.
Death never comes when you want it. Dying will always leave a hole. And orphans are just as wonderful and deserving as anybody else.
