The three vignette on nothing

one

Rabbit in the back field
Father got me to shoot it badly with a shotgun
we walked up, it was kicking pathetically
I still held the gun
He said "finish it."
I hesitated
It's eyes shining wide, nostrils flaring
"Finish it!!"
I hammered the shotgun butt
onto the rabbits head
"That's my boy!" He said, proudly
I look into its glazed eyes
I was numb
That death ment nothing

two

Anthony Dent
School friend, asthma patient
Died very young
we traveled in buses
To line up and kiss him goodbye in his coffin
He looked like he was sleeping
But I knew better
He was dead as that rabbit I felled with the gun
Ice cold skin
Nothing behind his closed eyes
We all came out wailing and crying
Went home in buses
Over three bridges

three

Pain in my chest
Saturday night
Lots of charlie
Autumn '98
Grew intense like fire so drove myself to A and E
Collapsed at the door
Heart attack confirmed
Passing out, feeling cold
Anthony Dent lying amongst flowers
Dead rabbit in the brown grass
My eyes fade out...
I awake
I'm alive, but can confirm no insight
to death except
Nothing
