Faith(less)

She came to me
years ago
softly whispering
in my ear

Her truth
Her rules
for saving
absolution

Her mock smile
and coquettish glances
drawing me to her warmth
like kids to the candy man

But She was a prize
a gift
never meant for me.
I wasn’t blessed

Magic
is only magic
If you refuse
the reality

When I looked up
hoping to behold her beauty
I discovered
She wasn’t there

This lass was
never with me
I trudged on
alone

These footprints in the sand belonged only to me

Author's Note
This was inspired by LilDragonFly’s Faith. All organized religions never worked for me, because ultimately they wanted to rule me.  But the thought of salvation is a sweet alluring thing.  Too sweet and too alluring, a way to stave off the darkness.  Well the darkness is real.
