No shame & no point beating yourself up about this. These are learning experiences. How much of your soul they destroy depends on how much you loved him. If it is just a matter of hurt pride, which I know it isn't of course but the poem seems to suggest it is because it doesn't go really in-depth this time but rather, focuses on one particular aspect of your relationship, then you will bounce back quickly.
In my view, the poem deals with the part that feels taken for a fool.

What an ominous, frightening phrase "proliferating regrets." I love your words, brava🙏💐

Every mistake we make is a more valuable lesson in life than anything else as we stumble blindly into adult hood full of hopeful expectations and the delusional belief that everyone we share this Earth with is our friend. I believe everyone should experience at least one bad relationship in life, as it shows us exactly what we're not looking for, and help us appreciate the good ones.
Or is it just me that thinks that??
The good news is, your bad relationship is done. Over. You now know what to look out for so the next one should be plane sailing.
