THE DOG LEGS

For years I’ve been
putting my thoughts
in their place,
still at times
they can race,
taking me spaces
I don’t want to
go, retracing
the facts which
I already
comprehend.

Like a car speeding
up on the straight
until it hits
the bend,
without properly
functioning brakes
it takes all
my energy to
maneuver through
the dog legs,
until things
slow themselves
down.
