CURTSY TO THE QUEEN

She'd gone into hospital;
for a hysterectomy,
after eleven children
it was necessary you see.

The nurse had not read the chart
which confined the woman to bed,
she got up to curtsy to the Queen,
then at her feet fell down dead.

Her daughter had gone to school,
was pulled out of class that day,
asked
“Do you know where your father is?
Your mother has just passed away.”

Author's Note
This poem was inspired by a conversation I had with the girl pulled out of school, now in her 70's at least, we walked home from the shops together and she shared with me the story of her mother. The Queen sent flowers to her mothers' funeral. I was very moved by the story and the shock and sadness that she felt when she was questioned so abruptly. I told her that I would write this poem for her mother.
