The Paste Eater’s Grave
I.
In Goldfield, Nevada
there stands a stone-
unknown man
died eating library paste
July 14, 1908
The postmortem examination
revealed he was starved to death—
would have found the mixture sweet:
flour, water, 60% aluminum;
but, an entire jar a deadly treat
The only thing to his name
was a letter addressed to Ross
Despite newspaper headlines
dating 1908, skeptics
—in their infinite wisdom—
claim his grave a hoax
the story made up
Paint is too fresh, they say
despite professions
by locals who repaint yearly
in remembrance of the dead
Even in death, the self-righteous
balk at homeless dignity
I could say the moral is
Never eat glue;
but, I would be wrong—
The moral is: truth survives
gossip mongering lies—
causing doubts in faith
pitting friends against allies
One day, the stones will cry out
and justice measured equally
in proportion to their deceit
II.
May whoever he is—
knowing this, rest in peace

O M G This is wonderful!
I mean, your choice of subject and the writing! It's terribly sad. But talk about a moral lesson about one's past catching up with his or her present. Lies always lead back to the truth.
I LOVE the rhyming that accelerates in just right places; despite the distance travelled, "deceit" still plays nicely off "sweet"and "treat".
Part Ii. in its brevity, is the perfect ending. Irony? Karmic?
Poetry, definitely.

the hunger for food is so much greater
than the hunger for knowledge,
I'd have eaten the whole bleeding library ..
than the hunger for knowledge,
I'd have eaten the whole bleeding library ..

It's so sad no one took notice; doesn't seem much has changed over the decades or centuries.

Dear A,
It’s a rotten feeling not being believed. Whoever this was, may they know vindication from this piece. Lovely write! H🌷

This drew me in from the start because of the dark, quirkiness it breathes. I really love this. Interesting little read! And a kind, fair word to put out into the universe, for this soul in specific.

These lanes really stood up and demanded I speak. This, too. Is enduring truth.
Also, and I can’t stress this enough, who is Ross? What did the letter say? I find these little leftover fragments of lives lived so incredibly intriguing. So many answers we will very likely never have about little snapshots in time - like a letter left behind.
As always, a beautiful write that leaves me deep in thought about Truth, and our very human way of interacting with it. .

Your answer will mimic butter's, as you both commented along the same vein. I felt the same way about this man - so many unanswered questions. It would appear the letter would've contained some kind of answer; however, we'll never know.
I did a search trying to find out more - here is the actual newspaper. Strange things in Nevada back in the day - the story below this one is about Boys shooting a man because they thought he was a rabbit. Woman wanting to kill herself after her husband beat her. I ended up reading the entire thing. A sobering enlightenment.
I read once that the library and the post office are two of the main buildings the homeless inhabit. The naysayers were obviously trying to protect the town's reputation. . .

Wow, this is some superb writing, before knowledge comes the need of basic survival (at least that's what Maslow's Hierarchy of needs says), well the moral anyway isn't about eating library paste but the superiority of the truth

the smartarse in me wants to say he was in the library because 'man cannot live on paste alone', the importance of words more vital than his desire for food.
of course, this isn't about that... i am tangential, at times.
in the library for shelter and warmth, off the streets, i'd suppose. starving, and stumbled on this palatable mix, not realising it would be the death of him. it is, in truth, a damning comment on society. i wonder if he could read? it says he had in his possession 'a letter to Ross' though i don't know if he wrote that himself/received it and could/couldn't read it. i'd have thought if he wrote it OR received it then he was literate. we don't know enough about him to understand the whole story. we don't know his previous circumstances... may have been not only literate but understood the poisonous nature of the paste, but for whatever reason decided it better to die this way than continue to starve. we just don't know. what you have here, A, is a very thought-provoking piece. i want to know if he was Ross or if it was a letter he never sent... who was Ross? why was this man carrying this letter? his death from eating paste seems almost an aside to the questions in my mind about this man's life.

Profound and poignant A...something that had the profoundest influences on me was a 3 day Taoist retreat I did many, many moons ago...it was run by an old Chinese Teacher and he told us that at the end of the retreat we would truly get a look at our "True Self"...yeah right I thought lol. Simple rules...no talking (as per usual)...but there was to be no eating or drinking of anything...yep, no water. At the end of the 3 days the 20 or so of us that were left, about a dozen had given up...we were seated on our meditation cushions and he smiled an old smile and then put a banana and a single glass of water on the table in front of us...he spoke softly..."Can each of you see your True Self? I did, and I still do to this day. A terrible beauty my friend.

Thank you, my friend. Would've loved to have attended that retreat. I've fasted two weeks before; three days seems a wonderful price to pay for meeting yourself.
One of the best pieces of advice I ever had was from an old Chinese man ( his nickname was Old China ). I've never forgotten it.

I am too, Hrshykiss. I love history and could delve in it all day. Sometimes I think I missed my true calling. But not enough to give up what I'm doing now! I have it made!
I earnestly tried to discover more about him but only found the newspaper the article was published in, sadly. I imagine the contents of the letter were probably an inclination that he wasn't Ross - more like a last will or something, I feel.
Thank you. Always good to see you back. <3

What an interesting piece. I visited a mission some months ago and walked through their graveyard and wondered about the life that was once. I love that moral of the story concept that also still leaves me wondering about the life of this individual.
Well done Ahavati.

A curious but tragic story.
In the stanza
The moral is truth survives
gossip mongering lies—
causing doubts in faith
pitting friends against allies
Maybe consider
The moral is: “ truth survives
gossip mongering lies” ...
(Or something similar) so that the moral stands apart ftom “The moral is”

It was a very tragic story indeed. I am afraid it happens more in today's times than we care to believe.
Excellent suggestion. I think I'll revise it.
Thanks, SeaCat. Much appreciated. And nice to see you back.
