Thank you Ahvanti. The barbarians were a group of San Francisco poets who met at the cafe Barbar. David Lerner hailed from this group.

I was thinking of the 1989 Business/management classic "Barbarians at the Gate" on the leveraged buyout and then fall of the company RJR Nabisco (also made into a film) ... but now I know it referred to something much more important :))
