The pumkin lantern
Come gather round all good children
Find warm clothes stout boots and garments
All year things remained so hidden
The screams to start a racing heartbeat
Past the church yard in the mist
Whitened bones in the earth do shift
A yearly outing creaking oh so stiff
Mother said we must counter all that stuff
For a lantern we must carve
The thirtyfirst is halloween
The biggest pumkin make a start
Scoop it out till it is clean
Fashion it with an evil gleam
Crooked teeth twisted and bent
Malevolence that must be seen
A grimace to stand your hair on end
Light it with a stumpy candle
That decapitated squash
Cast that shadow with its mantle
Alive and ready to set off
Ready to collect the bounty
Neighbours await the expected knock
Sweets and treats and such aplenty
Or plagues of ghosts will run amock
Placate the threat with charms of sugar
Send them packing turn the lantern
Pockets ever growing fuller
The little horrors and all kinds of phantoms
Spooks hang on the web of malice
Bats tangled in the hair the menace
The sugar rush the threat to combat
Children out of control and rampant
The rotten teeth the nights legacy
Reclining in the dentist chair
The light to spy each cavity
A new denture set for each to wear
A horror story to always retell
Chew on this dark moral tale
The lantern lights the last farewell
The white ghost's of the teeth that fell
Find warm clothes stout boots and garments
All year things remained so hidden
The screams to start a racing heartbeat
Past the church yard in the mist
Whitened bones in the earth do shift
A yearly outing creaking oh so stiff
Mother said we must counter all that stuff
