Image for the poem the rose lives but to bloom and die

the rose lives but to bloom and die

Do not watch the petals fall from the rose with sadness; know that, like life,
things sometimes must fade before they can bloom again.
—Anonymous

..i..
the rose and i a common life
so fragile and so swift
beneath death’s sacrificial knife
each breath a fleeting gift

..ii..
the earth that strangulates our feet
but gives us strength to grow
as from the shadows of defeat
our life force dares to flow

..iii..
a crown of thorns our slight defense
against vile predators
who dog our paths with violence
our passions to devour

..iv..
and yet we bloom victorious
one bright and happy morn
before our end inglorious
belies that we’d been born

..v..
the rose lives but to bloom and die
to brighten someone’s heart
my brief sojourn to heal their cry
and peace to men impart
