Skull Candy (Prologue)

Prologue

Shadow, otherwise known as Briar, stood in the doorway of her sister’s room. Her sister lie on the bed, asleep.
“I’ll miss you…” Shadow said quietly. She was going out to find her real family and bring the real Briar home. She didn’t want to, but it had to be done. With a sigh, she turned and walked to her mother’s room. Her mother was sitting at her desk writing a letter to the real Briar, which she would never send, considering she didn’t know where she lived now.
“Mom, it’s time for me to go.”
“Br- Shadow, you don’t have to do this.”
“You just about called me Briar. You only want me to stay to replace Briar. I’m sorry, but I’m not staying any longer.
“I want to meet my real family, see my real mom. And, in truth, I act nothing like Briar. I don’t even know Briar, so how on God’s green Earth would I act like her?!? All I know about her is what you and Moon told me. When Moon wakes up, tell her I’m sorry.” Shadow turned away from the woman, whom she had pretty much known all her life. She was about to leave everything she had ever known, to go find a family she didn’t know, to find a girl who looked like her, who was taking her place in her family.
“Shadow, I’m sorry. I’ll tell you sister that your sorry for leaving her.”
“She’s not my sister! You and her aren’t even related to me in anyway!!” Shadow looked over her shoulder at Rose as she said this. Rose stood up and knelt down beside her bed. She pulled out a old trunk.
“Since you have you mind set on setting out on this journey, then you will need everything that’s in this chest.” Rose said, unlatching the trunk. She took out a sheath, and carefully unsheathed a sword. The hilt of the sword was a dragon, with red jewels for eyes. Shadow stared at the sword in amazement. Rose sheathed it and handed it to Shadow.
“Y-your giving it to me?” She stammered.
“Yes. It shall help you when you truly need it.” Rose replied. Rose lifted out something and handed it to Shadow as well. Shadow took it without asking questions. Then Rose handed her a half full backpack.
“Now go!!”
“Y-yes!” Shadow turned and darted out the room.
