Lessons from the Past

I used to say and believe, "It is what it is."
I realize that phrase makes me reminisce.
Listen to me say, "No worries. It's all good."
As if I'm gangster, or I grew up in the hood.

I often wonder if these statements are true
making us have no control over what we do.
We throw our ambitions to the wind
in hopes that the bad ones we can rescind.

We then become victims of circumstance
not thinking about the ending consequence.
So I like to write raps and rhyme,
Does it really require a life of crime?

Yes its true, I did some drugs in recreation,
I did get addicted to my pain medication.
I'm not writing about a life that's a fabrication,
I know personally making mistakes is an aggravation.

I'm not writing this to boost my reputation,
I hope you learn from my mistakes and not make a replication.
If my past can be used as a good inspiration
I will share it as part of my rehabilitation.

Alright I may have a past I sometimes regret
the lessons I learned taught me about self respect.
If you treat your friends and family with no love at all,
don’t be surprised when no one is around when you fall.

This lesson is better learned by heeding another's voice,
giving you wisdom to make the right choice.
I know it may seem like chains and captivity
but why fall and scrape your knees all bloody unnecessarily?

Trust me, I get it. You want to live your life,
but what if this wisdom will save you strife.
Give you a chance to just have one wife,
not making broken homes your normal rife.

I don't want you to follow what I say blindly
Do some research, don't take this lightly.
Trust but validate.
Remember to learn is to rehabilitate!
