emptiness

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.  Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ Luke 12:20 NIV

is your god yourself,
who sits proud on your high shelf?
do you crave acclaim,
as you worship your own name?

is humility
bitter medicine you flee,
as the dispossessed
crumble low at your behest?

do you boast aloud,
self-superior to the crowd,
as you cast your bones
to the dog man full of groans?

do you build new barns
for the surplus from your farms,
while your iron gates
spit upon the empty plates

of the souls that bleed
for your crumbs, on which they feed?
what if, this dark night,
with your castle gates locked tight,

you were called to give
stewardship of how you live?
how would you be blessed,
thus consumed by emptiness?
