harvest hymn

an octet

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.  Eccl. 11:1 (KJV)

i would serve a better purpose
if i lived my life on earth
seeking the lowly and
feeding the hungry
not expecting
recompense
for my
deeds
seeds
of nigh
prevalence
not excepting
that which is worthy
shall make the barren land
blossom with amazing worth
when the Master yields the surplus

This is a mirrored octet. The syllabic count in successive lines progresses downward from 8 to 1 and then upward from 1 to 8.  The poem expounds upon the godly principle of sacrificial love, whose bounteous returns come from God and not from man.  The fact that it is a hymn is reflective of the spiritual nature of personal sacrifice for the upliftment of others, especially the poor and lowly.
