Rain Or Shine

Relentlessly pelting,
drowning us out
over the course
of the afternoon
feet still wet
waiting my turn
to sing to those passing
brave enough to attend
hands chilled
from the damp
- that extra obstacle
to hitting the right notes

Winding the cords
striking the set;
packed up
until next time

*  *    *

Lonely drive,
the older troubadour
reflecting on the old ways

the excitement of an invitation,
offered a drink
choices available
mild flirtations
extended evenings

*   *   *

He never eats before a performance,
but his stomach is grumbling now
and he decides on take-out

"Dinner for one, please".

It pains him to say it,
pounding home that empty feeling
that of all that was given,
there is nothing to be returned.
