Watching God

I’ve been rambling on for too long
There’s a vulture at my feet
The wolves return from behind valley grass
I was sure I smelled defeat
But instead, a voice came up
And whispered so softly to me
“If you eyes are watching God, may it be the Good Lord whom you seek.”

Now I’m trying to keep quiet
With a straight face to the world
But you know, there’s always someone
Who don’t agree with what occurs
But I believe that somewhere
Yeah, somewhere out there, you see
That there’s just gotta be someone, somewhere out there for me

And the sun
Sits down
Catching its breath
In the streets

And the gold
Oh, that gold
Gold light pours down
And unto me

I swear I’ll see into the future
Just keep the past at your heels
Well, the blank spaces in the margins
Could explain how I feel
And the cops and beggars, all alike
Are keeping traffic high in the streets
They’re standing staring in awe, ‘cause it’s the light they finally see

And the bulletproof glass on the trucks
Keeps passengers wary of deceit
I don’t know a whole lot about you,
But I know that you know me
And I think I might be fallin’ for you
Just think of what we could be
But I’ll keep watching clouds pass me by, just waitin’ on you to speak

***I used the title of the book Their Eyes Were Watching God because the phrase really struck me, and this evolved from the idea the title gave me.***
